Despite the success of both of Holland’s Spider-Man movies, Mackie thinks that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could beat the movies out in the box office.

“There is competition within Marvel,” he said on XM’s The Jess Cagle Podcast with Julia Cunningham. “I want to see somebody do an algorithm or figure out if we were in a movie theater how much money we would have made ’cause I know it would’ve been more than Tom Holland as Spider-Man.”

Alas, since Disney+ does not charge per view for shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it would be hard to find out how many individual people watched the show’s premiere. And The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s $25 million per episode budget would also need to be taken into account.

How did Anthony Mackie make the ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ cast?

Mackie has been in the acting game for decades, though he is just recently reaching serious success. His first step toward becoming a notable actor was his role in 8 Mile.

“After that it was ‘Half Nelson.’ It blew up Ryan Gosling, so I was there to ride the wave,” he told Variety in an interview. “Then ‘The Hurt Locker,’ and it blew up Jeremy Renner. It was the joke for a long time — if you’re a white dude and you want to get nominated for an Oscar, play opposite me. I bring the business for white dudes.”

Though The Hurt Locker didn’t get him an Oscar nomination, Mackie does credit it with getting him into the MCU with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

But taking on the role in the Disney+ show felt more daunting to Mackie than his movie appearance.

“I didn’t think we could do on the television what we’d been doing on the big screen. I didn’t want to be the face of the first Marvel franchise to fail,” he told the outlet. “Like, ‘See? We cast the Black dude, and now this sh*t is awful.’ That was a huge fear of mine, and also a huge responsibility with playing a Marvel character.”

Luckily, Mackie’s fears were never realized and the show went on to gain the popularity that has made him believe it would do better than Spider-Man in the box office.
